Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s transition from WWE wrestler to bona fide Hollywood actor is complete – the man made more money than Robert Downey Jr last year.
Appearances in Fast & Furious 6, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and more helped him on to a record year, his 2013 movies collectively bringing in $1.3 billion worldwide at the box office.
This eclipsed even the notoriously well paid Downey Jr, whose action blockbuster Iron Man 3 was the highest-grossing movie of the year taking $1.2 billion.
Johnson, known for his wrestling catchphrase ‘can you smell what the Rock is cooking?’, is not set to slow down in 2014, when he will return to half-naked, ripped mythological hero roles in Hercules.
Fast & Furious 6′s box office success pushed two of Johnson’s co-stars into Forbes’ top ten highest-grossing actors of 2013 list – Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker – who came in behind Anchorman’s Steve Carell.
The wrestler paid tribute to Walker earlier this month, describing the actor’s big-hearted nature in a statement and saying that he ‘just wanted to help people’.
Sandra Bullock was the highest-grossing actress of 2013 thanks to Gravity, while RDJ was Hollywood’s biggest earner raking in $75 million.
