AGAIN, violence erupted in Borno State at the weekend, as gunmen
suspected of members of Boko Haram sect invaded Madayi village on the
Lake Chad shores and Sabon Gari town in Damboa council, killing 24
persons while about 15 others injured while fleeing the area.
Madayi is a border village on the shores of Lake Chad, and 258 kilometres north of Maiduguri, the state capital, while Sabon Gari is 112 kilometres south of the state capital.
Speaking on the incidents yesterday in Maiduguri, the spokesman of 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Col. Mohammed Dole said the victims, who were fishermen, were killed on Saturday while the terror suspects were deploying their ammunitions into the Abadam Forest.
He added: “The Boko Haram gunmen move in groups to their hideouts in Sambisa Games Reserves and Abadam council, including the one at Gulumba to launch attacks on neighbouring towns and villages in the state. Once the bandits sight villagers crossing the roads, they open fire on them and warn them not to disclose information to the security agents on their hideouts.”
He said at Madayi village, several houses and fishing boats were torched, before the bandit flee in their speed boats towards Abadam forests, while the attacks on Sabon Gari resulted in the killing of 17 people and burning down of 56 houses on the Maiduguri-Biu road.”
On the terror suspects’ hideouts, Dole said: “Four separate locations in Northern and Southern Borno have been identified as the terrorists’ hideouts. The one at the border area with Cameroun may be difficult to penetrate in dislodging the terror groups, as the hideout extends to the neighbouring country near Gulumba district in Nigeria.”
He said the military has already deployed its personnel to the affected “routes and hideouts” of the terror suspects, covering both ground and aerial patrols to protect people’s life and property in the state.
Narrating his ordeal, one of the injured fishermen, Isa Yakubu, who was brought to Maiduguri hospital yesterday said: “The gunmen attacked us on Saturday evening, while they were fleeing to the forests with arms and ammunition. One of the bandits told us that Madayi village residents have betrayed the sect members by giving information to soldiers and the police which led to the recent arrest of their commander in Northern Borno.”
He told The Guardian that he sustained gunshot wounds on the thigh and arm, while others had fractures while trying to flee the village for safety.
