The Nigerian Killed In India Simone Obodo Buried In His Home Town Imo State

Simeon Obodo, the 35-year old Nigerian who was killed in Gao, India, on October 30, has been buried in his hometown in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

Talking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday, a representative of the family, Ejike Esinkoye, said the funeral service of Mr. Obodo took place on Monday and he expressed dismay that the Federal Government did not send any official delegation to the burial.

He also said that the family had yet to receive any compensation or assistance from the India government.

You recall that Simeon's murder during a violent clash in Goa village, India, sparked a diplomatic row between both countries.
Around 200 Nigerians in India protested Mr. Obodo’s murder by blocking a national highway and ended up clashing with locals and police in the area.
Fifty-three of the protesting Nigerians were arrested and later released, after paying fees to secure their release.

According to a biography published by the family, Mr. Obodo was born on Nov. 1, 1977, he worked and lived in Port Harcourt before travelling to Liberia in 2009.
Mr. Obodo, who left Nigeria for India on January 9 before his unfortunate death on October 30, few days to his 36th birthday, is survived by an aged mother, daughter and wife.

José Mourinho calls Luis Suárez fall ‘an acrobatic swimming pool jump’

Liverpool’s Luis Suárez has a reputation for diving, and while we rarely see that side of him when the Reds are winning, his team’s last two games (both losses) have seen that part of his arsenal resurface. On Thursday at Manchester City, we saw Suárez dramatically fall away from Joleon Lescott while the Citizens’ defender had a hand full of jersey, while on Sunday, Suárez was seen going down in the penalty area to try to draw a penalty on Samuel Eto’o.

It’s not that Suárez is the only person to try to trick officials, but as the Premier League’s leading scorer, he garners more attention. And Sunday at Stamford Bridge, he garnered the attention of Chelsea manager José Mourinho.

Mourinho’s words from the BBC, after being asked whether Samuel Eto’o's challenge on Suárez late in Sunday’s second half warranted a penalty:

“It is not a tackle. Suarez lost the duel with [Chelsea left back Cesar] Azpilicueta, who has the ball and is leaving the box …

“Now he is doing an acrobatic swimming pool jump to try to get a penalty.”

“He is so clever because he also knows he is in the area with the Liverpool supporters behind him.

Suárez’s status as the league’s leading scorer isn’t the only reason people focus on his diving. It’s all plays into the duality of the Premier League’s best player. Wole Soyinka Loses Daughter

        

The daughter of Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, Iyetade, is dead.

A statement signed on behalf of the family by a former Editor of the Guardian on Sunday, Mr. Jahman Anikulapo and a close aide to Soyinka,  stated that Iyetade, a mother of two, died while  receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment at the University College Hospital, Ibadan,  the Oyo State capital.

 Born on June 6, 1965, the deceased, according to Anikulapo, attended Staff School and Queens School, Ibadan before reading Medicine at the University of Ibadan.

He described Iyetade as an “affable, intelligent and sometimes capricious,” lady who “struggled with her health in recent years.

“In spite of this, she greeted every day with a smile and doted on her two children. She took ill quite suddenly and passed away while being treated at UCH, Ibadan. Iyetade leaves behind two children, both parents, numerous siblings, nieces and nephews,” the statement added.

The statement did not, however, disclose burial plans for the deceased.

He was picked up by operatives of the Police Ambush Squad, Imo State Command two months after committing the crime.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole Survives Another Road Accident

          

Governor Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole survived a motor accident at Ewu Village along the ever-busy Benin-Auchi road in Edo State at about 9.45am Saturday, 28th December 2013 on his way back to Benin City from his Iyamho Village. The incident occurred at about 9.45am at Ewu, in Edo Central Senatorial District, when a Peugeot J5 Bus filled with tomatoes and plantains apparently lost control and rammed into the Governor’s Flag Car from the opposite direction before swerving into a roadside ditch.

Three vehicles in the Governor’s convoy were in front of the Governor’s Flag Car and had passed the Peugeot J5 Bus before it [J5 Bus] had direct impact with the Governor’s car, which had the Governor, his Aide-De-Camp [ADC] and his Driver as occupants. The Governor’s Car was badly affected but both occupants of the Peugeot J5 Bus and that of the Governor’s sustained no injuries.
 

The Peugeot J5 Bus was following a truck that was descending the Ewu Slope when it suddenly veered off into the Governor’s lane from the opposite direction and directly impacted on the Governor’s vehicle, apparently because of brake failure. The good story is that nobody sustained injuries in both vehicles. The Comrade Governor is hale and hearty, his ADC and other occupants of the Peugeot J5 are also in good condition.
 

The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Station at Ewu for further investigation. This is to assure all good people of Edo State that there is no cause for alarm. Their loving Comrade Governor is fine, hale and hearty as well as other occupants of the other affected vehicle. The Comrade Governor is wishing everyone a prosperous new year ahead.

Pastor Arrested Over Defrauding Church Members The Sum Of 20Million In Asaba Delta State

                                           

A pastor, Victor Osakwe, has been arraigned at the Asaba Magistrate Court, by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting victims of over N20 million.

The Acting Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, Charles Muka, told newsmen in Asaba that the pastor defrauded over 20 people of both property and money.

He also alleged that the accused was a fake pastor at the Holly Hill Zion Prophetic and Solution Ministry, located in Akwu Ofu, Asaba.

Daily Independent reports:
“Osakwe has been arraigned on 20-count charges for frequently defrauding over 20 persons of a total of N20 million.
“The Pastor’s mode of operation is to raise false alarm on death and imminent calamity on his unsuspecting victims to make them part with their cars and monies,” the police spokesman said.
He said that Osakwe had been remanded in the prison, adding that items recovered from him included two saloon cars, two jeeps, among other items.

Uganda recently signed a bill that further bans homosexuality. According to CNN, a man was burned to death for being gay shortly after.

The bill's original 2009 version, named "Kill The Gays," went as far as calling for the death penalty for certain homosexual acts; that provision was shelved following international furore.

Under its latest iteration, anyone who conducts marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples faces seven years behind bars. Failure to report homosexual activity to police is also criminalized. Doctors who treat gays, landlords who rent them property and those suspected of being gay are subject to five-year prison terms under the bill.

Anyone who offers support to homosexuals will also be committing a criminal offence, which can reportedly extend to counselling.

Though homosexuality has already been illegal in the South-east African nation, some argued this bill needed to be passed to safeguard against Western values.

Bloody Christmas in Lagos, C’River

                              

It was a bloody Christmas celebration in Lagos and Cross River states as no fewer than nine persons were killed in auto accidents on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning.

Five people comprising a baby, her mother, two brothers and a driver died on Wednesday in the Lagos State accident, while four youths died in the Cross River accident.

In Lagos, our correspondent learnt that apart from the five people that perished on Christmas day, another lady suffered a fracture after a container which was on an articulated truck fell on a commercial bus on Alaba Suru Road in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun area of Lagos.

Plane Crashes Into An Airport Building In Johannesburg,South Africa

 The wing of a British Airways Boeing 747 crashed into a Johannesburg airport building, slightly injuring four ground staff.
The accident at Johannesburg's OR Tambo airport late Sunday night was caused by the plane using the wrong taxi way which was too narrow for the passenger jet, the South African Civil Aviation Authority said Monday.
Air traffic control had instructed the crew of the British Airways Boeing 747-400 departing for London to use a specific taxi way, said SACAA spokeswoman Phindiwe Gwebu in a statement. However, the plane traveled on a different taxi way that was narrower.
This resulted in the plane's wing clipping a building behind the SAA technical hangars, she said.
Four ground-handling staff in the building sustained minor injuries when they were hit by debris after the aircraft's wing struck the building.
"The 17 crew and 185 passengers who were in the aircraft escaped unharmed and were evacuated," said Gwebu.
She said there was fuel spillage, but that this was contained by the airport's fire services.
Investigators witnessed the recovery of the aircraft, and the removal of the flight recorder, she said.
"The investigation continues," said Gwebu.
The aircraft was moved to a remote location and airport operations had not been disrupted by the accident, she said.

Three 6 Mafia founding member Ricky "Lord Infamous" Dunigan died on Friday night at the age of 40. His bandmate and uncle DJ Paul told Rolling Stone that the rapper died in his sleep of a heart attack at his mother's house in Memphis.

Video director Sesan and Beat FM OAP Fade Ogunro have lost their father Sesan Ogunro in a tragic robbery incident in Lagos last night December 22, 2013.

Couple Bathed With Acid,Doctors Battles To Save Their Sight

Mr.Tope Akinlabi and his wife Mulilat are battling with their lives as doctors in ile-ife are battling to save the bankers eyes,they were bathe with acid by some yet to be identified people.

They were both returning from home on foot after the close of work on monday,December16,when 2 men riding on a motor cycle met up with them and emptied the content of jerry can on them.

Tope was said to have gone to his wife’s shop at the Eleyele area of Ile Ife after he closed from work on the fateful day.

The attackers met up with them while the two of them were going home on foot  around 7pm when the incident happened.

It was learnt that while the husband’s face was badly affected, the burns on the wife’s face was less severe due to the Hijab she was said to have put on.

It was gathered that the screams of the couple attracted passersby to the scene of the incident. They were said to have chased the attackers and caught them.

When our correspondent visited the couple on Sunday, it was learnt that the husband was gradually regaining the use of his sight.

Tope said he was still scared because he did not know the people behind the attack and the reason they targeted his family.

He said, “After the close of work last Monday, I went to my wife’s shop and waited for her to close after which we went to an eatery and bought some snacks for our kids.

“My wife and I were walking on the road around a hotel at Eleyele Street when I saw a motorcyclist carrying a passenger coming towards us. I told my wife that this bike would hit us, but before I finished saying that, the person at the back of the bike poured acid on us.

“I started screaming and calling for help. Those around came to our rescue, while others pursued the two men who attacked us. Eventually, they were caught. Sympathisers started beating them, but one of the two bike men started pleading that they should not be killed because they were sent.”

The victim said he had not quarreled with anybody and nobody owed him, while he was also not indebted to anybody.

“We don’t have any enemy,” he added.

He urged the police to find those after his life, saying he was still living in fear because he didn’t know if those who attacked him were satisfied with his present state or had  wanted to kill him.

The wife, Mulikat, said she didn’t know why the hoodlums attacked the two of them, adding that those arrested had been taken by the police  to the State Criminal Investigation Department at the Osun State Police Command headquarters.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mrs. Dorothy Gimba, when contacted on the telephone, said she had not been briefed about the case.

She said, “I was involved in another assignment. But I will find out and I can assure you that we will surely investigate and make sure that justice is done in the case. Husband and wife attacked with acid? That is terrible.”

13-year-Old Gives Birth To Triplets. Police Hunt 61-Year-Old Man

                              
A 61-year-old man is on the run in the Dominican Republic after the 13-year-old girl he had a sexual relationship with recently gave birth to triplet boys.

In the Dominican Republic, the legal age of consent is currently 18, but the country actually has an extremely high rate of teen pregnancies, with around 15 percent of teenager girls becoming mothers.

The 61-year-old man is now being hunted by authorities who plan to charge him with sexually abusing a child. If found and charged, the man could face decades in prison for his crime.

The three triplet boys, named Samuel, Joshua, and Jovanny, were all born premature and each weighed around 3-4lbs at birth, but doctors expect them to survive. The young mother of the newborn babies is reportedly “happy” after giving birth, despite the seriousness of the situation with the much older man.

Doctors say the girl is expected to return home with her children soon. Police are still actively searching for the 61-year-old man who fathered the teenage girl’s children.

I wish to formally acknowledge your letter dated December 2, 2013 and other previous correspondence similar to it.

You will recall that all the letters were brought to me by hand. Although both of us discussed some of the issues in those letters, I had not, before now, seen the need for any formal reply since, to me, they contained advice from a former President to a serving President. Obviously, you felt differently because in your last letter, you complained about my not acknowledging or replying your previous letters.

It is with the greatest possible reluctance that I now write this reply. I am most uneasy about embarking on this unprecedented and unconventional form of open communication between me and a former leader of our country because I know that there are more acceptable and dignified means of doing so.

But I feel obliged to reply your letter for a number of reasons: one, you formally requested for a reply and not sending you one will be interpreted as ignoring a former President.

Secondly, Nigerians know the role you have played in my political life and given the unfortunate tone of your letter, clearly, the grapes have gone sour.  Therefore, my side of the story also needs to be told.

The Pastor of the Household of God Church International, Chris Okotie, recently bought a Rolls Royce Coupe, the 2014 Bespoke Edition, to mark his 30 years as born-again Christian and 27 years as a pastor. 

According Okotie’s close aide, the pastor spent N120m on the luxury car and had earlier spent N33m on a Range Rover Autobiography to mark a milestone of his church.

      Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday openly threw his weight behind the All Progressives Congress when some national leaders and governors of the APC visited him, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Our correspondent gathered that the APC leaders at the meeting solicited Obasanjo’s support for the party in the forthcoming elections.

The visitors started arriving at Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion around 5:22pm. As the new queen, Sena Suzan went home with a sum of $10,000 (N1,600,000), a one-year ambassadorial deal and also an opportunity to represent world beauty queens in different occasions.

In second place was Miss Sweden, Tewoldebererhan Makda who was given $4,000 while Miss Brazil,Paula Sovza emerged third and was awarded the sum of $2,000.

Feyisekemi Akinwale Wins ‘Next Movie Star Africa Reloaded’

               

Feyisekemi Akinwale, an Ondo State native, has been adjudged winner of the 2013 Next Movie Star Africa Reloaded edition.

The 19-year-old beat eight other finalists (including three other Nigerians) to win the eight edition of the reality television show.

Akinwale walks away with a brand new SUV, cash prize and promised movie roles.

‘I wasn’t expecting this at all. I just threw myself into the show believing that God’s will shall be done. Now, God’s will has been done. I am just too excited to say much now’, Akinwale says.

Tagged ‘Call 2 Stardom’, this year’s NMS Africa Reloaded edition featured housemates from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Kenya, Namibia and South Africa.

The likes of Uti Nwachukwu, Karen Igho, Tonto Dikeh, Annie Macaulay, Kevin Chuwang Pam, Tamara Eteimo, Lydia Forson and Adams Ibrahim have all previously contested on the show.

Mass Wedding - Kano State Spends N278m To Marry Off 1,111 Women

Kano State government has said that it spent a whooping N278. 270 million to facilitate the wedding of 1,111 couples under the fourth phase of its divorcees, widows and spinsters mass marriage programme. This translates to an average of N250, 468. 046 per couple.

Addressing the couples at a civic reception organized by the state government, Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso stated that the money was used to procure furniture, textile materials, foodstuff as well as provide grants for the brides and other essential items.

Kwankwaaso who described the event as unprecedented in the history of the West African sub-region, further stressed that the marriage programme was initiated to help people strengthen the family institution and halt social crimes in the society, most of which were as a result of erosion of family values.
