Below are some guiding rules for parents as you care and protect your children.

1. Your child needs to know vital information from as early as age three that will help them and others if they are ever lost or missing. That information includes their first and last name, their phone number including area code, their street address, town, parish and country. They will also need to know how to call for help using 119 on a telephone.

2. Children must be able to identify their body parts. Help your child identify their private parts using the correct terminology. Be sure to identify breasts, vagina, penis, and buttocks. Your child must also know that these are private areas that their bathing suit covers. Explain that only mommy or daddy may touch them in a certain way, or while being groomed or being examined by a doctor with mom or dad present.
3. Check first. Young children do not have the capacity to make sound decisions about their personal safety. The check-first rule is based on the premise that adults or older children should not be giving children gifts, offering them rides or coercing them into their home or car, for any reason without checking with their mom, dad or a guardian first. Children must check first before accepting a gift or going anywhere with anyone, even if that person is someone known to them.
4. We all have that feeling inside that tells us what feels right and what feels wrong or uncomfortable. You must teach your child to trust and honour their inner voice or that ‘gut’ feeling. When you feel uncomfortable, do you trust that feeling and take action?
5. Listen to your children and encourage open communication. When a child’s feelings are continually cast aside, the child learns that the alarm inside of them is unimportant, so they eventually begin to disregard it altogether. This muffling of their inner alarm makes them more vulnerable to sexual predators who are masters at selecting children who have been taught not to communicate.
6. Some parents believe that they can teach good secrets and bad secrets. A child should not be expected to keep any secret at all. Simply explain to your child that secrets are against the rules. If you tell your child that there are good secrets and bad secrets, then you are giving them the responsibility of deciding whether or not they should keep a secret or tell, a responsibility they may not be ready to handle. The no-secret rule eliminates this problem and models healthy boundaries. You shouldn’t be telling your child something that needs to be kept secret in the first place.
7. Have your child practise screaming “NO!” and telling when someone does or says something that doesn’t feel okay.

Crocodile Caught in Lagos Posh Estate

It is rare to find wild animals roaming free in neighborhoods, so Omole estate in Lagos was recently thrown into a state of excitement when a crocodile was caught in the gated neighborhood.

The animal, which residents described as “very large”, became a spectacle at one of the gates to the estate, on Sunday, December 22, 2013. For residents not used to seeing wild animals lurking in their neighborhoods, the sight was unexpected.

The animal had earlier been caught by the estate’s security operatives around 2am on Omotunde Akinsola Street, by Today’s Car, after it strayed from a swampland at one end of the neighbourhood. Three bullets shot at the animal did not kill it.

So the initial buzz of excitement generated by the incident soon turned to apprehension for residents. Some of them described the crocodile which was over six feet long, as frightening.

A resident living by the swamp where the animal was caught, who identified herself as Ogechi, said she heard three gunshots that morning, and had thought they were meant to scare away robbers.

“Now, there is a general fear in the area caused by the incident. It’s amazing finding such a wild animal around where people are living; I think it’s very dangerous because a crocodile should not be going about in a neighbourhood,” she said.

Since the incident though, the neighbourhood has had its fair share of wild tales and gossips. Different accounts of the incident with varying sizes of the animal have been rendered from mouth to mouth in the estate that the facts have been blurred somewhere between the lines.

TRAGEDY: 2 Kids Burnt To Death On New Year's Day

Two children were burnt to death on new year night when a candle light razed their parents’ home at 12, Adebari Street, Agege, Lagos State.

The deceased kids were identified as Nosirat, 7, a primary one pupil of Starland Private School, Agege, while Basit, 5, was in nursery one of the same school.

In a statement made available to policemen attached to Elere Divisional Headquarters, Agege, the mother of the deceased  children identified as Mama Nosirat, explained how the tragedy occurred.

The Federal Ministry of Justice To Spend N181.3m On Clothing!

The Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters will spend the sum of N181.3m on uniforms and other garments in 2014, according to the budget estimates submitted to the National Assembly by Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

A copy of the proposed budget of the headquarters of the justice ministry, which was obtained by our correspondent, revealed that the sum of N181, 391,000 was allocated for “uniforms and other clothing” in 2014.

The sum is part of the total N4.7bn allocated to the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in the 2014 budget proposal.

However, the nature of the “uniforms and other clothing” was not disclosed.

The ministry is to spend the sum of N1.3bn on legal services in the New Year, while N1.4bn is allocated for consulting and professional services.

Travels, including local and foreign trips, formed a substantial part of the ministry’s proposed budget.

The sum of N362.6m has been budgeted for travels and transport (general).

Local travel and transport (training) and local travel and transport (others) will cost N76.7m and N142.3m, respectively.

In the same vein, international travel and transport (training), and international travel and transport (others), will cost N34.9m and N108.5m respectively.

The sum of N371.7m was budgeted for materials and supplies (general).

Also, the sum of N59.4m was set aside for foreign grants and contributions, as well as grants to foreign international organisations.

The proposed budget suggests that the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters intends to upgrade its security system as the purchase of security equipment as well as improvement of ministry security system would cost N40m, respectively.

The same N40m is equally budgeted for the rehabilitation and repair of office buildings, while the sum of N19.8m is provided for maintenance of office building and residential quarters.

Other sums allocated for maintenance works include N9.9m for maintenance of plants/generators; N27.7m for cleaning/fumigation services; and N59.1m for general maintenance of motor vehicle/transport equipment.

The proposed budget also reveals that the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters will spend the sum of N55.8m on fuel and lubricants.

Motor vehicle fuel will cost the sum of N24.7m, while plant/generator fuel costs the sum of N28.3m.

N7.8m is provided for refreshment and meals.

Also, the sum of N56.9m is earmarked for a baseline survey of justice institutions, while the sum of N16.5m is budgeted for ICT consulting.

The proposed budget further shows that the ministry budgets the sum of N37.2m for utilities (general).

Ian Rush has said the words no Liverpool fan wants to hear: Luis Suarez could be sold in the summer.

But Rush, Liverpool’s record goalscorer with 346, admitted that if the Merseyside club don’t make the top four this year then the Uruguayan could be sold… for £120m.

James Avery, Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, dies aged 65

James Avery, best known as Will Smith’s Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died aged 65.

Avery passed away on Tuesday in California, due to complications from open-heart surgery, his publicist Cynthia Snyder told The Associated Press.

His acting career began with an uncredited role in the classic film The Blues Brothers, before guest apperances in shows such as The Jeffersons, Newhart and The A-Team.

He then played Judge Michael Conover on LA Law and voiced the arch-enemy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredder, before moving on to the role he’s best known for.

Avery was the stern voice of reason in his nephew Will’s life, before growing into somewhat of a father figure in the six seasons of Fresh Prince, from 1990 to 1996.

The cast briefly reunited in 2011 at a charity event, and had remained close. Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Phil’s son Carlton on the show, took to Facebook to express his grief. ‘‘The world has lost a truly special man. I am very saddened to say that James Avery has passed,’’ Ribeiro wrote. ‘‘Even though he played my father on TV, he was a wonderful father figure to me in life. He will be deeply missed.’’
